With Six Days until Deadline, 66 Percent of Eligible Louisiana Families Apply for Pandemic EBT Program

With six days until the deadline, applications for the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) Program have been submitted on behalf of 403,731 children, or about 66 percent of all eligible children in Louisiana. The application portal opened May 18, and the deadline to apply is June 8.
Louisiana to Feed as Many as 600,000+ Students Whose Schools Closed in Pandemic

05.15.20 - Louisiana has received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help feed as many as 611,430 students during the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced today. Under the new Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) program, families of children who normally receive free or reduced-price meals at school may get financial assistance to replace those meals. All Louisiana public school and many non-public school facilities have been closed since March 16 because of the pandemic.

Supplemental SNAP Benefits to be Issued to Many Louisiana Households on Tuesday

Many Louisiana households who received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in March will see an extra boost on their SNAP cards Tuesday (March 31, 2020), following a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) authorizing supplemental SNAP benefits to bring each household to its maximum allotment by size, in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As dictated by federal law, households already receiving the maximum SNAP allotment for their household size will not receive supplemental benefits.

A new rule that takes effect April 1 will require some Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to meet new federal work requirements to continue receiving federal food assistance, commonly known as “food stamps.” The federal government also has granted a waiver for 14 Louisiana parishes that will not be impacted by the new rule change.
